An article about the 1970 fire that destroyed the packing and storage building at Whitesbog. The article makes note that the fire was likely started due to faulty electrical wiring and that harvesters, sorters, and packing machinery were also destroyed. No lives were lost and no other buildings were damaged.
The front page is in bad shape, part of the article can not be read because of a hole. There is a copy of the front page, but not of the second, which is in good shape.
Due to the condition of the first page, and how dark the copy is, the first part of the article is included here.
"Three firemen required hospital treatment and half a dozen others, overcome by smoke and prostrated by the heat were treated at the scene as flames swept through the berry packing and storage building and machine shop of Joseph J. White Inc. on Lakehurst Rd., Whitesbog, Monday. With damage estimated in excess of $200,000, some 60 volunteers from Pemberton, Browns Mills, Country Lakes, Presidential Lakes, Magnolia Road, Wrightstown, and Cookstown companies fought the fire from the first alarm at 12:30 until well into the night. For five hours it raged out of control, driven by high winds as firemen fought valiantly, hampered by lack of water. Finally brought under control, the men from the seven companies battled the blaze for over seven hours. Some remained on guard all night."
