Field Trips
The Whitesbog Preservation Trust invites all ages of visitors to learn about the history of cranberry farming, life in a rural South Jersey Company Town and the individuals and culture that supported the farming operations and Elizabeth White’s efforts to cultivate the first highbush blueberry. Explore the Village on your own, attend a scheduled program, or sign up for guided tour. Check our Calendar of Events for dates and times. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the Field Trip Request Form, good for all ages of visitors! Feel free to blend trips or ask about specific interest areas.

Pond Ecology

Discover the multitude of living things found in the cedar water of the Pine Barrens.
Students will perform a pond aquatic species survey, observing and identifying wetland species.
Lenape: Living in the Pines

The Lenni Lenape were one of New Jersey’s first peoples. Students will engage in traditional tasks, story-telling and games. This immersive experience allows students to actively learn about the past.
New Jersey Cranberry Industry

Explore the soil and water in the wetland habitat of the native cranberry plant. Observe the modern harvesting operation (if in progress); and learn about what happens afterwards including being able to hold and taste fresh cranberries.
Exploring Freshwater Wetlands

Students will venture into the depths of 3 different wetland areas in order to learn about wetlands in general and about the vital role wetlands play to the New Jersey Pinelands.
Spring Adventures

These adventures will capture a young student’s sense of wonder through first-hand exploration. Discover frog and tadpole adaptations, and catch dragonfly nymphs and other aquatic creatures living in a pond.
Pine Barrens Ecology

In teams, students will practice their field work skills by collecting data on water and soil pH, soil composition,percolation, and fire contributing factors, and working on plant and animal sign identification skills.
Autumn Adventures

Through exploration of natural sites, students will take a journey to explore migration, hibernation, and other winter adaptations of local species.
Cranberry Company Town

Students will visit a selection of buildings in our historic village, participate in old-time house chores, explore our museum, and do hands-on farm work activities. The company store will be open for making purchases. Have students bring money if you are interested.
Winter Adventures

Students will have the opportunity to observe rare Tundra swans, find hibernating insects in galls, practice animal tracking skills, and take a nature hike.
Pollinators in the PINES

Birds, butterflies, bats, mammals, bees and moths all play a part in pollinating our foods and native Pines Barrens Plants. Students will learn what plants are pollinated by which creatures, known food webs, host plants, and nectar plants. We will show students the Whitesbog Pollinator Gardens and can visit your school to help you start your own pollinator garden!
Elizabeth White and Cultivation of the Blueberry

Find out about how Elizabeth White pioneered the cultivation of the high bush blueberry. Investigate the history of the blueberry in North America. Hike out to see various varieties of blueberry plants.
